Snake Oil is as old as dirt. Back in the day there were those remedies that “cured” everything! If you have ever attended a State Fair, you can find snake oil salesmen today. They have amazing remedies for everything, so they say.
My first used car came from a snake oil used car lot. It was a 1969 Ford Fairlane, stick shift and the heater broke along with the gas gauge as soon as I drove it off the lot. No refunds, and I still had to pay for it. My future husband learned so much about cars from my less than reliable used car, that he could almost get anything to run after that car. Now I want to be sure to say, that I have owned many Fords since then, all were great cars and I didn’t get them from the snake oil car lot!
A bad experience, from a snake oil salesman can make you leery of the “real thing”. I learned that it wasn’t my car, it was old and abused. The problem was the dealer made it “look good”, and promised it was reliable. He promised he would never sell me a bad car! Well I now look back on that and I am grateful for all the things he taught me. Don’t ever believe a word of a snake oil salesmen!
What does this have to do with your marketing? Unfortunately there are those that make lots of marketing promises they can’t deliver, that aren’t true and give a bad name to those of us who can deliver and strive to give over and above customer service to you. So if you have had a bad experience, or you are leery of snake oil marketers, check out their credentials and get a referral from a friend and see if they belong to the Better Business Bureau. Then you can trust that they have your best interest at the forefront of the marketing they do for you. Good marketing companies do what they say and more! It costs you money every day to not be found and reaching your target market. You have a valuable services and or products that are needed by many! A good marketing platform will help to reach those customers and grow your business, why would you not want to do everything you can to be known by your target market?
